How The Contemporary Tourist Intelligence collects, evaluates, and presents official tourism data.
Tourism statistics are published by dozens of organizations using different reporting schedules, definitions, and methodologies. TCTI brings those official datasets together into one transparent platform while preserving the context needed to understand every number.
Our Purpose
Why We Built TCTI
Tourism is one of the world's largest industries, yet understanding tourism data often requires searching across multiple international organizations, government agencies, and statistical databases. Even when official statistics are available, differences in reporting years, methodologies, and geographic coverage can make comparisons difficult.
The Contemporary Tourist Intelligence (TCTI) was created to organize official tourism statistics into one transparent platform that makes tourism data easier to explore without hiding where every number comes from.
Rather than creating our own tourism scores or proprietary estimates, we focus on making official statistics more accessible, easier to interpret, and connected through clear explanations, consistent methodology, and educational context.

Official Sources
TCTI prioritizes statistics published by recognized international organizations and national statistical offices rather than creating proprietary estimates.
Transparency
Every indicator is designed to display its reporting year, source, dataset, and supporting context whenever that information is available.
Best Available Data
When multiple official organizations publish similar statistics, TCTI selects the most appropriate verified dataset while preserving historical observations.
Historical Context
Official tourism statistics evolve over time. Older observations remain part of the platform rather than being overwritten so users can understand changes in reporting.
Education
Our goal is not simply to rank destinations. Every dashboard and indicator page is designed to explain what tourism statistics measure and how they should be interpreted.
Continuous Improvement
TCTI is continuously expanding its coverage as additional countries, indicators, and official datasets become available.

How data moves through TCTI
Every number begins with an official dataset. TCTI then organizes, validates, and connects that information before presenting it across the platform.

Official organizations publish data
International organizations, regional statistical agencies, and national authorities publish official tourism statistics.

Datasets are imported
TCTI imports structured observations while preserving the original indicator, source, reporting year, and dataset information.

Records are reviewed
Imported records are checked for usable values, country matching, source attribution, and indicator consistency before publication.

The best available record is selected
When multiple official observations exist, TCTI selects the strongest verified record according to source priority, definition, reporting year, and coverage.

Historical records are preserved
Older observations and alternative official sources remain stored rather than being overwritten by the currently preferred value.

The data is connected across TCTI
The selected values power country dashboards, global rankings, indicator pages, and comparison tools while retaining their original context.
Data Selection
How we choose the best available statistic
The newest number is not automatically the most appropriate number. Multiple official sources may publish statistics that appear similar but use different definitions, geographic coverage, reporting periods, or collection methods.
TCTI evaluates each observation within the context of the indicator it represents. The preferred record is selected from verified or published data while the remaining official observations are preserved for historical and methodological context.
This process allows the platform to present one clear value on a country dashboard without suggesting that alternative official records never existed.
Understanding Tourism Data
Why tourism statistics are not always directly comparable
Tourism statistics are collected by many organizations around the world. Although these datasets are official, they are not always published on the same schedule or using identical methodologies.
One country may have released data for 2024 while another has only finalized statistics through 2023. Some indicators are measured directly by national statistical offices, while others are compiled through international organizations.
These differences are a normal part of tourism statistics—not an error in the data.

World Bank

Rankings
How TCTI rankings should be understood
TCTI rankings organize the best available official statistic for each country into a clear comparative view. They are designed to make broad patterns easier to explore, not to declare that one destination is universally better or more successful than another.
Because countries publish tourism data on different schedules, a ranking may contain observations from different reporting years. The source, year, dataset, and indicator definition should always be considered alongside a country's position.
Rankings are most useful as a starting point for analysis. Country size, population, economic structure, destination strategy, geographic coverage, and statistical methodology can all influence the values being compared.
Consider the Year
Countries may appear in the same ranking even when their latest official observations come from different reporting years.
Review the Source
Individual records may come from different official organizations depending on coverage, availability, and source priority.
Use Context
A higher value does not automatically indicate a healthier, more sustainable, or more competitive tourism economy.
Our Boundaries
What TCTI does not do
Transparency also means being clear about the limits of the platform. TCTI is designed to organize and explain official tourism statistics, not to replace the organizations that produce them.
Estimate missing values
We do not create substitute figures when an official observation is unavailable.
Invent tourism scores
We do not turn unrelated statistics into proprietary destination ratings.
Hide reporting years
The year attached to an observation remains visible so users can judge its recency.
Remove source attribution
Official organizations and datasets remain connected to the records they published.
Overwrite historical records
Newer preferred values do not erase older official observations from the system.
Treat rankings as absolute
Rankings are presented as analytical tools rather than final judgments about destinations.
Platform Status
TCTI is currently in beta
The platform is actively expanding its country coverage, indicators, source integrations, and analytical tools. Some destinations and measures may therefore have limited or incomplete coverage during this stage of development.
New features and datasets will be added without changing the platform's central commitment: tourism intelligence should remain transparent, source-based, and understandable.
